Abstract

<PICT:0638992/IV (a)/1> In a process for preparing thermoplastic powders, the thermoplastic material and colouring matter, in a powdered condition, and a plasticizer in a liquid condition, are separately injected through two or more nozzles 2, 3 to meet at a common position in a container 1, and form a coarse mixture which falls on to a shoot 4 and thence to an extrusion press where it is heated, compressed and homogenized. From the press it issues in the form of threads which are cut into very small fragments to form a powder ready for use. As shown, the press comprises a worm 7 which pushes the material through a multiple die plate 8, the issuing threads being cut into fragments by revolving blades 9 or a taut wire. The worm may be slightly tapered or may decrease in pitch towards the die plate. There may be two or more worms. The extrusion cylinder 6 is heated as by means of a jacket. To prevent the fragments sticking together, the die plate may be cooled by means of a jacket and air jets may impinge on the cut material. The thermoplastic material may be vinyl resins, polystyrol or cellulose acetate.
