Abstract
568,570. Controlling aircraft at take-off. KRONFELD, R. July 31, 1941, No. 9738. [Class 4] A take-off control for aircraft comprises a feeler which contacts with the ground while the aircraft is land-borne and is displaced by gravity or spring means as the aircraft rises, this displacement effecting adjustment of the wing-flaps or propeller pitch, the jettisoning or retraction of the undercarriage, and, when the undercarriage is jettisoned, actuating retarding means for the undercarriage. Fig. 6 shows a detachable undercarriage secured to the aircraft by pins 20, 21 connected by links 22, 23 to a lever 24. The lower end of the lover has a roller 28 pressed by a spring 30 against a cam 29 rotatable by a feeler 31 contacting with the ground. The feeler is mounted on a shaft driven by a slipping belt in the opposite direction to the land wheels so that as soon as the machine rises the feeler is depressed and the cam 29 rotated until the lever 24 withdraws the pins 20, 21. The lever simultaneously applies a brake 26. A weight 34 may be connected to the feeler by a cable 35. To prevent bouncing of the undercarriage, the feeler may cause a plane to be tilted upwardly to act both as a brake and to apply downward pressure to the undercarriage, or rockets may be fired upwardly and forwardly, or a parachute-like drag allowed to open. Delay action may be provided in case the aircraft touches down immediately after rising. Fig. 8 shows an undercarriage in two parts coupled together by a releasable coupling 40, 41. When detached from the aircraft the coupling is released and weights 43, or automatically released drogues, cause the two halves to roll apart clear of the track of the aircraft. According to the Provisional Specification, the undercarriage leg or tail wheel may act as a feeler for actuating parts on the aircraft, or a feeler formed of telescopic tubes may be used and the lower tubes jettisoned after take off.
