Abstract
627,322. Aircraft brakes. LINES BROS., Ltd., and SMITH, S. O. Dec. 5, 1946, No. 36041. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXIV] An aircraft is provided with a movable skid shoe mounted to apply frictional braking effort to a landing wheel by coming between the wheel and the ground, the shoe being held clear of the wheel during take-off by a mechanism which allows it to move into an operative position in contact with the wheel in consequence either of the aircraft becoming airborne or of the aircraft landing. A winged target or pilotless aircraft is described which is braked on landing by a ground contacting shoe 12, movable from the inoperative position shown to a braking position between the wheel 3 and the ground and held inoperative against a bracket 17 by cables 9 reeled on a spring- loaded bobbin 7 and held out of contact with the wheel by'the collapsing arms 21. Springs 19 bring shoe 12 into contact with' wheel 3 when the arms 21 are collapsed by a cable 79, connected through a lost motion connection 116 to a Bowden control 26 actuated by a ground contact arm 60 through a mechanism 68 and a time delay device 69 which are identical to those described in Specification 618,106. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the arms 21 are replaced by a fixed arm, downwardly hooked to engage shoe 12, which is released by a plunger-type catch operated by the cable 79. The shoe 12 is provided on its wheel contacting surface with a heatresisting insert 66 and on its ground contacting surface with a renewable pad 13. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), adapted for use on catapulted aircraft, the release mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 618,485. except that the ground contacting arm 60 may be moved into its operating position by said release mechanism. The ground contacting arm 60 may also operate the take-off flaps and/or a towing cable release gear as described in Specifications 618,106 or 618,485.
