Abstract
698,339. Aircraft landing lamps. HARLEY, M. C. Dec. 12, 1951 [Sept. 12, 1950], No. 22442/50. Class 75(iii) In a retractable aircraft landing lamp operated by an electric or hydraulic actuator d, having two mutually. telescopic members, in conjunction with limit switches or the like and a resilient connection f which effects resilient holding of the lamp in its retraction position, the actuator d embodies a connection g between one end and a fixed anchorage h or between the other end and the lamp housing b, the connection g being arranged to give way under a predetermined air pressure on the lamp when in an extended position thereby to allow the lamp to move back into retracted position irrespective of the operative setting of the actuator d. As shown the connection g is at the anchorage end of the actuator and comprises an arm pivoted about the fixed point h and having a recess k normally engaged by a roller m on one end of a spring-loaded pivoted lever n. The arm g has a disc portion j associated with adjustable spring-controlled friction discs q which control pivotal movement of the arm g when the latter is disengaged, under pressure, from roller m. The lamp b has a catch roller t to engage with a slight clearance w behind a remotely controlled latch member u when the lamp is in its retracted position. In operation, when the lamp is forced back by wind pressure, the actuator d is moved bodily, such movement being, controlled by the friction-controlled rotation of arm g. Movement of arm g may operate a warning lamp whereon the pilot operates the actuator d into the retracted position. Since the lamp is already retracted, such operation of the actuator causes return movement of the arm g into its normal position in engagement with roller m. Specification 627,946 is referred to.
