Abstract

568,505. Aeroplanes with auxiliary rotors. HAMMOND, E. V. Feb. 1, 1943, No. 1650. Addition to 499,632 and 524,913. [Class 4] An aircraft with fixed wings and fitted with an auxiliary rotor or rotors, as described in the parent Specifications has means, for discarding or jettisoning its rotor or rotors during flight. The rotor has a main blade 1 hinged at 4 to a rotor head 3 to which a much shorter blade 2 is pivoted in place of the balance weight described in the parent Specifications, the blade 2 being sufficiently heavy to balance the main blade 1. Means such as an interrupted screw-thread connection may be provided between the main blade or both blades and rotor head for jettisoning the blade or blades, or a split nut connection may be used for that purpose. The means for slowing down the rotor as described in the parent Specification may be used, or other braking means employed. The blade 2 may be of hard wood, plastic, or metal and the blade 1 built up on a square or round tube 9 with balsa wood or plywood ribs 10. The inner end of the tube 9 is squared and secured to straps 7.
