[Class 61 (ii)] A device for putting up and taking down elongated electric discharge lamps 12 from the contact sockets 11 of an elevated holder 10, as described in Specification 544,562, [Group XXXVI], comprises a gripping device 18 so mounted on a long shaft 16 as to enable the lamp to be first located between the sockets and then rotated through a right angle to engage the contacts. The gripping device 18 consists of resilient jaws 19 lined with flexible gripping material 34 and carried on a support in two parts 24, 25 pivoted together at 21 and normally held in the relative position shown in Fig. 5 by a spring catch 26, but which latter can be overcome by a pull wire 30 enabling the jaws to separate slightly to release the lamp. The part 25 is carried by a spring hinge 22 on a socket member 23 screwing on the top of the shaft 16, the spring hinge normally holding the jaws 19 disposed in upright position as shown in Fig. 5, but after the lamp 12 has been located between the sockets 11 the shaft 16 may be manipulated to give the gripping device 18 and the lamp gripped thereby a rotation through 90 degrees about the pivot 22, the holder being retained in this rightangle position by a latch 35 engaging a catch 36. The end of the hand grip 17 is recessed to engage and remove the switch unit 14 from the part 15. The modification, Fig. 7, comprises a shaft 37 and transverse support 38 on which are mounted three spring cradles 41, 42, 43 on hinges 44, 45, 46, the centre cradle lined with rubber or other gripping material and provided with a pull wire 48 for releasing the grip.
