G. E. HATFIELD DEVICE FOR HANDLING ELECTRIC L'IAMPS AND THE LIKE Filed June 21, 1922 T f-vmrsef arrill Patent-ed e e. 11," less.
r1. nerrrnnn, or; orrioi nnvron ron'rrnnnnine nnnorero AND LIKE;
App'lieationfiled June 21, Serial so stat-4:3.
'To slim/17mm it may concern." it knownthat I, Gnonon E. HATFIELD,
lamps are used in considerable quantities it is necessary to wash and recolor the lamps at more or less frequent intervals. The
lamps are usually washed, that is, the old color removed, by dipping them in lye water, rinsing them in hot water, and then dropping; them on a bed of sawdust or similar material to. dry. I 1
Une object of the present invention is to provides device by -means of which the lamp may be manipulated during this weshing process without the hands of the operetor coming in contact either ith the weshing solution or with the lamp; or which may be used for temporarilysupporting electric lamps or similar devices where no current- Another object of the invention is to provide such a? device with means for sup- 'iorting the same on a receptacle with the lamp immersed, or partly immersed in the solution within'the receptacle.
A further object oit the inyentionfis to provide edevice of this kind which will be simple in its construction and which may be quickly and easily operated to insert and remove the lamp and which canhe produced and sold atalow cost.- V
Other objects of the invention may appear as tho-device is described in detail.
In the accompanying drmtings Fin. 1 is a side elevation ota-device embodyingmy inyention 'showin the lamp supported within a receptacle; Fig. 2 is a front end ele-j ration of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View showing the device without the: supporting clamp; and hi plan view of one end of the device.
in these drawings 1' elnliodi out or" my invent on and have shown the same as @OJllllSlD-g; ithandle upon which is mounted a two part socket,
with zt-plate 9 which may, it

one part offwhich is inoyahle relatively to the other to permit the base of the lamp to he inserted in and removed from" the socket and which is provieed with means for holding the movable portion of the socket in its operative position that is, in a. position to clarnp the base of the lamp between the two parts of the socket lit will'he nuderstooiil that the particular device here shown has been chosen for the purposes of illustration only and that the invention may talie various forms without departing from the spirit thereof. I The 1 particular device here shown coniprises a handle 1 which may be inadeof wood end on which is mounted the socket consist:
ing of two parts, 2 and The part2 is in the present instance, rigidly secured. to the end of the handle 1 and is here shown as having formed integral therewith a base portion t which is secured to the end of the handle 1 by means of a screw The other part 3 ot' the socket may bemounted inany suitable manner for movement toi'vnrd and from thexpart 2 of the socket. In the presenttorin of rthe device the part 30-16 the socket is carried by and preferably formed integral ith a lever 6 extending longthwisejotv the handle and piyotelly mountedhetween its ends on .a. pivot pin 7 mounted in lugs 8 secured to the handle 1 and in the present instance formed integral desired, he formed integral with the base '4- of the part 2 of the socket, thus enabling the part 2 of the socket, itsibase, the plate 9 and the lugs 8 to he cast as a unit; The movable: part 'ofthe'socket is preferably held in its operative position by means of a, spring and I have-here shown av spring 10 coiled about the pivot pin 7 having; one end been ing'ageinst the plate 9 and hayingv the otherend looped beneath that end of the lever opposite the part 3 of the socket. This end of the lei-Fer may be provided with a thumb piece. 1'1 by means of which the vided with screw'threads which'are. so a'r-Z i T rangedlthat when the twofparts of a socket lamp is lying on its side;
are in V, their'g closed position the threads thereof will engage'the-threads on the base ofthe lamp and thus firmly hold the same 2 against movement in the socket;
7 "l't'vwill' be' apparent from the foregoing description that thedevice is [very simple in its construction and that it may be easily operated manipulating the lever j"6;.with the thumbof the hand which grasps the'handle l lVhile the lamp will usually be lifted by the hand of the operator and placed in the socket, this is not essential as the Ibaseiof'the lamp can be gripped-betweenthe two parts of the socket while the The washing or other treatment. ofthe lamp 'may then be 7 "accomplished and the lampfinally released 20 from the socket without the necessity of the operator touching the' lamp, with his hands. The device comprises but'a few pieces, that is, the handle 1 the two parts of the socket with their connected devices the ivot )in 7 and the spring 10." 'Not' only can these 1 parts he very cheaply manufactured but they are very easily assembled, thereby permitting the device to be produced at a very low cost. V
ertain treatments of the lamps, suchas etching, require that they be immersed', or partly immersed, in a solution and retained therein tor a period of time. To enable i th'ejdevice to be. utilized for thi'spurpose I embrace the handle 1 and to'be clamped thereon by means-of a screw '14, Secured to this bracket is a clamping device and in the present instance :the bracket comprises an upright portion, or plate, 15, the lower partfof which constitutes one member of the clamp. Pivotally mounted on the bracket is alevcr 16, the lower end portion of which constitutes the other member of; thee/lamp, As here shown, the lever 16 is pivotally mounted between its ends on a pinl'? mounted in pivot lugs 18 carried by I thelupright memberiii of the bracket. The
upper portion ofthe lever eXtonds above the bracket and is provided with a thumb piece 19 by means of which the clamp may be manipulated, A. spring. acts on the lever to move the lower end thereof toward the fixcd'clamping member 15. "Inthe present ing respectively against the upright member 15 of the bracket, and the upper portion of the lever 16. The lower portion of the movable member is provided with a clamping head 21 which is curved to conform it to curvature of the pail and is preferably inclined to a icommodatc it to the inclination of the wall of a tapered pail. In order that the device may be mounted on a receptacle, or pail, having a vertical wall and the lamp supported in an upright position therein, I have mounted in the lower portion of the lever 16 an adjustable stop, such as a screw 22 which may be so adjusted that it will engage the outer surface of the receptacle at the same time that the ends of the curved head 21 engage the pail, thus ret aining the handle 1 in a vertical position. It will be understood that the lamp handling device may be used either with or without the supporting clamp, but by the use of the clamp the device is given a much wider range of utility.
7 While I have shownand described one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may occur to a person skilled in the art.
