Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its Simplicity of construction, in its convenient and efiicient operation, in its adaptability to accommodate containers of different sizes and types, in its provision for allowing a greater portion of handleless containers to be grasped by the hand of a user, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and Construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention showing a glass placed therein;

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the invention per se;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3--3 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the invention almost encircling a cup, a clamp attachment being used in association With the invention 'so as to fasten the same with increased security at the edge of a conventional tray;

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5--5 in Figure 4 and showing the container by phantom lines, and

Figure 6 is a top plan View of the clamp attachment shown in Figures 4 and 5, the holder and the tray being indicated by dotted lines.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more particularly to Figures 1-3, inclusive, the invention consists of a container holder which is designated generally by the reference character o and embodies in its Construc- 2: tion a resilient rod which is' curved soas to pro'- vide a substantial annulus !2 the 'end portions of the rod being'turned'flrst outwardly` as at I'4, then laterally as at l lifand then downwardly se as: te; afford a pair of spaced' legs IS.

substantially horizontal, elevated position above the table top, so that when a container, such as a glass 26, is inserted in the annulus and has its bottom resting on the table top, the container will be prevented from tipping or otherwise becoming displaced.

As is best shown in Figura 4, the same holder may be effectively employed to accommodate a cup 28, the handle of the latter being disposed in the space between the legs IS so that it may be Conveniently gripped when it is desirecl 'to remove the cup from the holder.

Moreover, as is illustrated in Figures 4, 5 and 6, a clamp attachment designated generally by the reference character 32 may be employed in association with the holder lfl, this clamp attachment simply consisting of a vertically elongated member or strap 34 having horizontally angulated upper and lower end portions 36, 38, respectively, to accommodate a vertically disposed, rotatable actuating screw 40. I

To prevent longitudinal shifting of the screw relative to the member 34, that portion of the screw which passes through the strap portion 38 is diametrically reduced to form a rotatable journal 42 (see Figure 5), the extreme lower end of the screw being peened while a finger piece 44 is provided at the upper, free end of the screw, so that the latter may be Conveniently rotated.

The portion 38 of the strap member 34 is extended so as to provide a relatively stationary jaw 46, while a movable jaw 48 has a doubled portion 50 provided with a screw-threaded aperture to receive the screw 40, so that by simply rotating the screw, the jaw 48 may be moved toward and away from the stationary jaw 46 for clamping the entire attachment 32 to a suitable support, such as the rim portion 52 of a tray 54.

The movable jaw 48 is provided with an in ternal extension 56 terminating in a resilient hook 58 which is preferably engageable with an in- 3 termediate portion of the annulus l2 of the holder ID which has the suction cups 22 thereof resting on the tray 54, as shown. In the event it is desired to attach the container holder to a surface covered by porous material such as a table cloth, the vacuum cups would be unable to maintain suction, thus necessitating the use of the clamp' attachment, and thereby limiting the use of the container holder to a position substantially near any outer edge of the surface on which it rests.

If desired, the suction cups 22 may be removed from the legs l8 so that only the members 20 of the legs contact the table or tray, as the case may be.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary. I

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

'1. A holder for a container having a laterally projecting handle, said holder comprising a curved rod affording a substantial annulus disposed in a horizontal plane and adapted to receive the stated container therein, end portions of said rod being spaced and downturned to provide a pair of legs whereby said annulus may be sustained in an elevated position above a supporting surface and whereby the stated handle may project outwardly through the space between said legs, a pair of suction cups removably mounted at the lower ends of the respective legs, and a supporting clamp mounted on an intermediate portion of said annulus and adapted for attachment to a support.

2. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said clamp comprises a vertically elongated member having a stationary jaw at one end thereof, a vertical clamping screw rotatable in said member, a movable jaw operatively engaged by said screw for movement toward and away from said stationary jaw, and a resilient hook provided on said movable jaw and separably engaging an intermediate portion of said annulus.
