[Class 135] In addition to the main pump 17 which actuates a piston 10 connected by linkage (not shown) to propeller blades to vary their pitch, a large capacity pump 31 is provided, adapted, when a control valve 36 is operated, to take the place of the main pump to effect rapid movement of the piston in either direction, to reverse the pitch and return it to normal. Normally, the pump 17 supplies pressure fluid to a line 21 or 22 leading to one side or other of the piston 10 when change in speed. causes a centrifugal governor 19 to move a valve 18 in the appropriate direction: The valve 36 is then in the central position shown. To reverse the pitch, the valve 36 is moved to the position 38 thereby cutting off the lines 21, 22 from the cylinder at 43, 44 and cutting in the pump 31 at 46. The pump 31 operates at a high pressure determined by the relief valve 32, and delivers fluid to the right of the piston so that the piston is driven to the left. To restore the pitch to " forward," the valve 36 is moved to position 37, thereby connecting the pump to the left of the piston at 46. A second relief valve 55 is now connected through a passage 52 in a byepass for the pump 31 and as this valve 55 opens at a lower pressure, the pressure available to drive the piston 10 to the right, while still sufficient to effect rapid operation, is insufficient to move the piston beyond the normal operating range. The limit of this range is determined by an extension 60 of the piston, closing at 58 the normal outlet for fluid from the right-hand end of the cylinder. To move the piston farther, for feathering, pressure sufficient to open a valve 56 controlling a byepass must be provided, e.g. by means of a separate "feathering" pump 29.
