Abstract
637,323. Variable-pitch propellers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 31, 1947, No. 20782. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1940. [Class 114] In a tandem variable-pitch air-screw rotated in opposite directions by a single engine the rear screw is controlled externally whilst the pitch of the forward screw is adjusted to correspond to the pitch of the rear screw blades. The blades c of the rear screw are operated by supplying pressure fluid from the pump j, above or below the piston l under the control of the valve i. The pump is driven by contact with a doublelobed face cam k. The control valve is moved radially by centrifugal force to maintain a constant speed against the action of a spring h, the set speed being adjusted by moving the roller g by longitudinal movement of the collar e from the control lever d. The forward blade cc is similarly adjusted by supplying pressure fluid from the pump jj above or below the piston ll under the control of the valve ii, the pump being driven by the single lobed face cam kk. The control valve is adjusted by the bell-crank lever xx from the collar ee moved longitudinally by screw and nut gearing driven by the movement of the ring gear o connecting the roots of the blades c. The valve ii is also moved by the follow-up gear link ss one end of which is attached to the rod uu operating the bell-crank xx and the other end of which follows the cam slot rr in the crown wheel oo. The cam slot can be shaped so that the blades of the forward propeller exactly copy the movements of those of the rear propeller or they may have a proportional movement only.
