557,907. Variable-pitch propellers. HOOVER, W. S. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 16073. [Class 114] In a variable pitch propeller mechanism in which differential gearing for adjusting the blades is actuated by a fluid pressure motor driven by a fluid pressure pump under the control of an engine driven governor, means independent of the pump are provided for supplying pressure fluid to the motor to drive it in either direction for feathering and unfeathering while the engine is at rest. The blades 11, 12, Fig. 1, are connected by bevel gears 14, 15 to a bevel gear 16 having a spur gear 20 meshing with planet gears 19 which are carried by the hub 10 and mesh with a gear 21 driven by gears 22, 23, 24 from a gear 25 driven by the fluid pressure motor 36, Fig. 2. This motor is normally driven by a pump 28, which may be driven by the propeller engine or by a separate electric motor 29, and the speed of the motor 36 is such that no relative movement of the gears occurs. The return flow from the motor is controlled by a valve 46 operated by governor weights 49 so that variation of the speed of the engine results in change of speed of the motor 36 and consequent change of the pitch to restore the speed. As manual control 50 for the valve 46 is provided. To enable the motor 36 to be driven in either direction when the propeller engine is at rest, a pump 39 driven by an electric motor is provided and a valve 40 directs the flow to one side or other of the motor 36 as desired.
