Abstract

568,341. Propelling and steering boats. HUGHES, R. M. (Murray & Tregurtha, Inc.). Sept. 17, 1943, No. 15246. [Class 114] Outboard propelling and steering mechanism comprises a motor 2 on a frame 4 adapted to be installed on the deck of a barge &c. and supporting by a shaft 5 a casing 19 containing a vertical shaft 11 driving a propeller shaft 12, the axis of which is to one side of the vertical axis about which the casing turns for steering, thus counterbalancing the effect of the transmission torque reaction on the casing. The shaft 11 may, e.g. be formed in sections connected by universal joints, the lowest section driving the off-set propeller shaft through bevel gearing. The shaft 5 supports the rotatable casing 19 through a housing comprising telescopic sections 20, 21, the latter being rotatable by a gear 47 about the shaft 5 as axis and having a lower extension 22 in which the casing 19 is rotatably mounted. The motor shaft 6a drives the propeller through a bevel gear engaging a bevel gear 8 rotatable on the support shaft 5 and integral with a second bevel gear 9 engaging a gear 10 on the shaft 11. The housing 19 is rotated for steering through a worm gear 29 engaging a worm on a shaft 31 driven through sprocket and chain and bevel gearing. The housing 21 is rotated to lift the propeller out of the water by a pinion 48 on a shaft 49 engaging the gear 47, the shaft 49 being driven by a worm 51 on a shaft actuated normally through reduction chain- and-sprocket gear. Locking means in addition to that provided by the worm gearing comprises a brake band applied, by a handle 88, on a drum on the shaft 49. The base of the propeller drive housing 19 contains an oil pump 68 driven by gear 69 on the propeller shaft and supplying oil to a chamber 72 at the top of the casing 19 and to the gear 8, 9.
