[Class 83 (iv)] A plate &c. is bent or aligned with another part by tack-welding thereto a thin strip 68 and pulling said strip while applying pressure at adjacent points of the work. For this purpose a clamp is used comprising a curved beam 50 with a detachable hook 65, to engage a hole in the said strip 68 which may take the form of a washer, a fixed pressure foot 51 and a foot 59 connected by a ball joint to a pressureapplying screw 54. If the work has the form of a strip D, Fig. 7, the pull may be applied by jaws 75 instead of the washer and hook. When the plate has been brought into desired position it may be welded to another plate or structural part E, e.g. of a ship. In a modification, the washer 68 and the foot 51, Fig. 9, engage a work-part H, while only the plate 59 engages the plate J to be bent. If a plate F, Fig. 8, is to bebent to engage a member ,G by an operator at the opposite side to the plate, the washer 68 is welded thereto, but the feet 51, 59 both engage the member G. In modifications, the clamp may have fixed end feet 51, 59 and-an intermediate jack for pulling, or each end foot may have a jack for pressing, or three jacks may be used. The pressure means may comprise, instead of a screw, a lever and ratchet, hydraulic means, &c.
