Abstract
567,802. Soldering-irons. ROCHMAN, A. I. June 4, 1943, No. 8961. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] An electric soldering-iron of the bench type has between the base and the bit a flexible member of sufficient flexibility to allow the bit to be moved by the operator to various positions with respect to' the base, but of sufficient stiffness to withstand displacement by the pressures normally obtaining between the work and the bit. The tool comprises a hollow metal base 1 with cover 2 and switch 4 and with a boss 6 into which is screwed a ferrule 7 from which extends a length of tubing 8 comprising concentric helical wire coils which may be bent without acquiring a permanent set. A ferrule 9 secured to the other end of the tubing fits into a metal tube 10 which receives the shank of the bit 12. The assembly of tube, bit and heating element may be as described in Specification 556,609, and carries the leads 14 which are provided with nesting porcelain beads supported by washers in the portion surrounded. by the flexible member and which at their lower ends are connected to the switch. The iron may include an illuminating lamp and a rapid heating device, as described in Specification 564,388, [Group XI]. The support for the bit may consist of a rigid tube for a distance from the base. The iron may be secured to a wall instead of to a bench top.
