Abstract

567,743. Angular bending. PARNALL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and DRAPER, F. C. April 22, 1941, No. 5183. [Class 83 (iv)] Formers.-An apparatus turned about a pivot on a former for bending a tube round the former is furnished with a housing slidably adjustable towards the former and containing a slidable slipper or shoe for engaging the tube, the housing having also a roller for bearing on the rear of the slipper at a point in an axis lying in a plane perpendicular to the length of the slipper and passing through the axis of the pivot and a second roller engaging the slipper at a point in advance of the first roller in the direction of bending. On a bed plate 1 are secured at appropriate angles a number of brackets, each of which is slotted as at 3 to receive the pin 5 of a grooved former 4 which comprises an arc-shaped portion and straight side portions, and is mounted on a cheeseheaded bolt 7 and is secured to the respective bracket by a nut 8. The pivoted bender comprises a handle 20 having a head 26 provided with holes 27, 27a, either of which may be placed on the bolt 7 according to whether bending is to be effected in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Mounted on the handle is a bifurcated member 13 or housing connected to a sleeve 19 which is adjusted towards and from the former by a nut 23, a key 21 on the handle engaging a slot in a part 18 of the housing 13 to prevent relative rotation thereof. The slidable shoe 14 is mounted in the housing 13, pins 15 on the housing 13 engaging grooves 16 in the shoe and thrust rollers 17 arranged as shown in Fig. 6 engaging the back of the shoe. Stops 28, 28a in the ends of the shoe limit the sliding motion. The work may be secured to the former by a screw clamp 12 recessed at 11 to engage a pin 10 on the former. The tube may be filled with pulverulent material or with material introduced in molten condition and allowed to solidify. Clamps or other supports for the work may be provided between adjacent formers.
