Abstract

567,375. Injection-moulding machines. SHIPTON, E., and HILL, W. N. March 31, 1943, No. 5125. [Class 87 (ii)] The hydraulic, air or other pressure cylinders 9, which impart vertical reciprocation to the injection plunger 13 via rods 10 and yoke 11, are disposed below or to the side of the bulk feed hopper 4, whereby any fluid which leaks from the cylinders cannot drip into the hopper. The cylinders are fed (by connections not shown) from a reservoir 35 by an electrically-driven pump 36 ; two pressure relief valves permit the use of two pressures in the cylinders. When the plunger 13 is at its nadir it prevents entry of plastic material from the hopper into the melting chamber 5. To prevent material falling on to the back of the plunger, a sleeve 50, of the same diameter as the plunger, surrounds the latter ; alternatively, the plunger-carrying rod 12 and the plunger may be of the same diameter and may form an integral body. A two-part hinged cover 14, 15 encloses the top of the hopper. The injection nozzles 23 have heat - insulating sleeves 24 and extend radially from the base of the melting chamber. Mouldcarrying tables 25 are vertically adjustable on the machine frame, and may carry slides to feed the moulds up to the nozzles'where the moulds are locked in position. Another table 30, bolted to the machine frame, carries a hotplate for pre-heating moulds. Cooling-water issuing from the moulds is collected in a drain tank 34. A tray 2 collects water which drips off the tables and delivers it to the tank 34. In modified, constructions : (1) there may be only one cylinder 9 which may operate the plunger 13 either by a lever arm or (when the cylinder is disposed directly below the melting chamber) by a loop-shaped yoke or a. rod passing through an opening in the bottom of the melting chamber; and (2) the melting chamber may extend upwardly through the hopper, a series of apertures in the chamber being covered and uncovered by the moving plunger.
