Abstract

565,398. Releasable fastenings. MALCOLM, Ltd., R., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. Feb. 2, 1942, No. 1393. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXXIII] Aircraft wings are provided with detachable wing tips fitting closely upon the ends of the wings and secured by at least two pairs of locking members, adapted to be projected above and below the median plane of the wing, which can be released to jettison the wing tips at any time during flight. The end of the wing is straight with rounded corners in plank and curved in crosssection to fit the corresponding curved end of the detachable tip. Fig. 4 shows the securing mechanism which may be provided at the end of each spar. Two hook members 10 are pivoted on spindles 16 extending between side plates 15 secured to packing pieces 9 on the outer ends of the spar. The hooks 10 engage recesses 12 in plates forming part .of a steel fitting piece 11 on the inner edge of the detachable tip, side plates 29 preventing fore-and-aft sliding movement of the wing tip. The hooks 10 are held in their engaged position by toggle links 17 connected together by a spindle 18 mounted in blocks 19 sliding in guides on the plates 15. The blocks 19 are connected by a link 21 to an arm 22 on a shaft 23 extending between the two spars, the shaft having a centrally placed arm 28 connected to a hydraulic jack 25 or other mechanism for turning the shaft to withdraw the hooks 10. The link 21 and arm 22 form a second toggle to lock the links 17 in their straightened position. The tips enable a heavier load of fuel to be carried at take-off and are jettisoned when extra speed and manoeuvrability are required.
