[Class 57] In a multi-speed governor for regulating the speed of a rotatable member, the setting is changed from one speed range to another by centrifugal means caused'to act by compelling the rotor to assume a speed outside the range in which the governor is operating; the governing is effected by a centrifugal electric contact rotating with the rotary member. Fig. 1 shows a governor comprising a contact weight 17 mounted on a spring 18 ; when the rotor is made to rotate at a greater speed than the normal range, a spring-pressed lever weight 26 is forced into contact with an outer stop 28 and a projection 30 on its inner end contacts with the spring 18 and shortens its effective length. In a modification, the " fixed " contact 16 is mounted on a spring-pressed lever which assumes one or other position according to the speed range. The spring 18 may be replaced by a weighted bell-crank acting against spring pressure to force a contact on the unweighted arm against a contact on a similar abutment lever assuming one of two positions. The levers may move in planes normal to or passing through the axis. A three-speed governor, Fig. 5, comprises a lever 50 coacting .with abutment levers 32a, 32b. In the lowest range both abutment levers are still, and governing contact is made through contacts 16a, 17a ; in the second range only abutment lever 32a is moved and governing is through contacts 16b, 17b ; in the highest range, both abutments move and contacts 16a, 17a are effective.
