Abstract

433,306. Fluid - pressure brakes. SMITH, D. M., 37, Church Street, Stretford, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Feb. 8, 1934, No. 4247. [Class 103 (i)] [See also Groups XIX and XXVI] A device for indicating and controlling the angular acceleration of a rotating body comprises a helically coiled tube 1 rotated about its axis x-x at a speed corresponding to that of the rotating body and having its ends 2, 3 arranged along the axis so that the inertia of a body of liquid contained in the tube causes the axial displacement of the liquid when acceleration or deceleration takes place. The coil may vary in radius and may be limited in length to form only part of a single complete coil. The liquid may act upon pressure-sensitive devices embodying either a bellows moving a toothed sector, or a coiled tube tending to straighten out under increase of pressure. By placing one end of the tube at a greater radius from the axis of rotation than the other end, a device sensitive to both speed and acceleration is obtained. The displacement of the liquid may be used to control the acceleration of a body, for example, in the brake governor gear described in Specification 392,252, wherein the inertia governor may be replaced by the coiled tube device.
