Abstract

564,819. Sirens. LEAR AVIA, Inc. April 6, 1943, No. 5498. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1942. [Class 13] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft is fitted with one or more sirens normally mounted so as not to add substantially to the aerodynamic resistance of the aircraft, but adapted to be exposed to the airflow when it is desired to produce sound during flight. In one form, a dive-bomber is fitted with a number of sirens 24, 25 of different pitch in the braking flaps 21 which are normally netted in recesses beneath the wings, but are turned down into the airflow during a dive. In another form, the sirens are mounted in discs having streamlined edges 55, Fig. 10, mounted on rods 57, projecting through the fuselage skin, the rods being rotatable through 90 degrees to bring the discs from a position in which they are edge-on to the airflow into the position shown. In another form, the sirens are extended and retracted through holes in the fuselage which are closed by plates carried by the siren casings 'when the latter are retracted. In another form, Fig. 9, the sirens are each mounted in the throat of a venturic passage 41 arranged just within the fuselage skin, the forward end of the passage having a hinged scoop 37 by which the passage is opened to the airflow or completely closed, a flap 38 completing the external contour of the fuselage when the scoop is withdrawn.
