564,783. Gyroscopic apparatus. HALLSTROM, H. H., and EHLIN, K. A. June 9, 1943, No. 9255. Convention date, June 4, 1942. [Class 97 (iii)] An air-driven gyroscopic apparatus having three degrees of freedom and comprising an inner Cardan ring in the form of a closed casing 4, 5 containing the rotor 1 is characterised in that the outer Cardan ring 20 is also formed as a closed casing and the motive air for the rotor is led through channels in one or both of the journal trunnions of each Cardan ring. As shown, the trunnions 24 of the outer Cardan ring 20 are pivoted in arms 26 projeoting from the front plate of a housing 28. Air is drawn in through channels 29, 31, 32, 33, trunnions 11, channels 10 in the inner casing, and out through nozzle-shaped orifices 12 to drive the rotor. The driving air from the upper side of the rotor is led away through channels 16, 15 and out through the upper trunnion 24. From the lower side of the rotor, the driving air is discharged through two parallel channels 13 leading to outlets 14 and thence through the upper trunnion 24. The outlet channels 14, 15 are situated symmetrically in relation to the outlet trunnion 24, and any tendency of the outer Cardan ring to leave its proper position is avoided.
