Abstract

.563,787. Fuel injection pumps. C.A.V., Ltd., and NICOLLS, W. E. W. Feb. 26, 1943, No. 3200. [Clase 102 (i)] In a liquid fuel injection system for internalcombustion engines in which a variable delivery metering pump b supplies the fuel in variable quantities to one or more injection pumps a directly connected to injection nozzles c and adapted solely to discharge through the nozzles, the fuel received from the metering pump, each pump a comprises a barrel k containing a relatively long cam-actuated plunger q and a relatively short free plunger r, and provided with ports o, p through which an auxiliary liquid such as lubricating oil can pass, under the control of the plungers, from a supply connection n and an annular gallery m to a space between the adjacent ends of the plungers. Fuel supplied by the pump b passes through an inlet pipe i with a non-return valve j and a branch passage h to move the plunger r to an extent dependent on the quantity received from the pump b, and this quantity is discharged through the nozzle c by the action of the plunger q through the medium of the intermediate auxiliary liquid. The positions of the nozzle c and inlet pipe i may be interchanged. The pump b is of the multi-delivery swash-plate type with a delivery which is variable by hand or automatically in response to the speed and/or load of the engine. For this purpose the plungers 7 may be rotated about their longitudinal axes by means of a lever 11, toothed gearing 13, and sleeves 14 surrounding the cylinders 3 and engaging notched collars 15 on the plungers.
