Abstract

563,779. Wet separating. RIDLEY, F. F., and SCHOLES, W. Nov. 14, 1942, No. 11895/44. Divided out of 563,754. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (ii)] In the separating of solid granular materials, such as coal or ores, in a stream of liquid of a density intermediate those of the solids being separated, the stream is caused to flow with increasing velocity while the floats and the material below the surface of the stream are caused to travel with the latter, the sinks being mechanically conveyed along with the stream. at a depth suitable for separation so that the materials and stream all move in the same general direction. The conveying is carried out under the whole path of the floats and over the width of the stream and the middlings are caused by the stream to discharge with the floats or the sinks or separately from either and may be transported to their discharge over weirs mechanically or by the current flow or by both. The liquid is composed of a suspension of finely ground solids in water and the flow is sufficient to prevent settlement of the solids so as to maintain the uniform density of the suspension. The process is carried out in the apparatus described and illustrated in Specification 563,754.
