Abstract

562,624. Valves. PUMP ENGINEERING SERVICE CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1943, No. 574. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1942. [Class 135] A vent valve assembly particularly adapted for use on aircraft fuel tanks is actuated by means responsive to changes in atmospheric pressure so arranged that excess pressure in the fuel tank may open the valve notwithstanding the atmospheric pressure responsive means has moved the valve to the closed position. In the form shown in the Figure, a lift valve member 31 co-operates with a seat 28 to control the connection between an atmospheric vent 26 and a port 27 connected by a pipe with the upper part of a fuel tank. The valve has a guide sleeve 35 slidably mounted on a tubular guide 36 formed integrally with a ported partition in the casing and has ports 40 controlled by a vacuum relief valve 41 slidable on the sleeve 35 against the action of a loading spring 43. A spindle 38 slidable in the guide 3,6 is clamped at its lower end to a diaphragm 45 for balancing atmospheric pressure on the upper side of the valve 31 and at its upper end is connected by a dovetail arrangement with the lower rigid end 61 of a barometric capsule. The upper . rigid end of the capsule is adjustably supported by a ring 57 screwed into the casing and locked by projections 58 on casing cover 23. A rod 4 secured to the plate 56 limits collapse of the capsule which is evacuated to a desired degree, for example, to the pressure existing at 14,000 feet above sea level. A spring 63 normally holds the valve 31 in engagement with a shoulder 39 on the spindle 38, which spindle has a passage 49 for connecting the chamber below the diaphragm to atmosphere. A cam 68 on a manually-operable shaft 70 is provided for positively opening the vent valve. This cam may be provided with a second lobe to limit the downward movement of the spindle.
