[Class' 74 (ii)] A needle bar 10 for a straight-bar heeling machine comprises two inner parts A and two outer parts B pivoted to the parts A so that the outer parts B can be folded so that the needles in the parts B are parallel to those in the parts A or may be secured in an extended position with the needles in all the parts in substantially a straight line. The outer parts B may be raised in moving them to the folded position. In the described method of knitting the heel tabs, the terminal course of the high heel RH and the initial course of the foot bottom RS of the right-hand side of one blank are run on to the left-hand pair of parts of the needle bar, and the left hand corresponding courses of another blank are run on the right-hand parts of the bar while the outer parts B are in the folded position. The courses are separated by cutting or the removal of a draw thread and the outer parts are opened to the extended position, and heel tabs are knitted simultaneously upon the high heel parts on the needles of the parts A. Yarn carriers may be provided for feeding yarns to the needles of the inner parts A, the selvedge stops for determining their traverse at the inner edges being adjustable, and fashioning points may co-operate with the needles in the part A to fashion the selvedge edges of the heel tabs. A broad set of transfer points may be associated with each outer part B for transferring, one or more loops at a time, all the loops on the needles of the outer parts B to the needles of the corresponding inner parts so that seaming or linking of the inner edge of the heel tab to the initial course of the foot portion is avoided.
