Abstract

1,069,812. Knitting. G. BENVENUTI and E. MORELLI, [trading as INDUSTRIA CALZA TOCANA BENVENUTI & MORELLI SOCIETA IN NOME COLLETTIVO]. May 5, 1964 [May 8, 1963; Sept. 5, 1963; Sept. 20, 1963], No. 18537/64. Headings D1C and D1K. A pouch, for example the heel of a stocking, is knitted by continuous rotary knitting on a circular machine by introducing part courses in that portion of the tubular knitted fabric where the pouch is desired, the ends of the part courses are caught in by the needles adjacent and extending beyond those forming the part courses and subsequently severed close to the fabric. The extent of the courses in the pouch portion is varied from course to course, as illustrated in Fig. 1, in which the first course is knitted over a minimum group of needles A and thereafter gradually increase on the groups of needles B on either side during successive courses. After the first four courses the number of needles is again reduced to the minimum group A whereafter the active needles are again gradually increased over the following courses. This increase and decrease in operative needles is gradually extended up to the maximum of the needle groups B1 to B8 of the groups B during the formation of the first half of the pouch whereafter the needle selection reversed to produce the second half of the pouch, the two havles being symmetrical. As the pouch is knitted by continuous rotary knitting the ends of the yarns of each course are fed in and severed and are caught in by spaced needles beyond the operative needles forming the heel group of a particular course. This is achieved by providing nibs on the end jacks of each group the nibs extending beneath one or more of the butts of the adjacent and if desired spaced needles. When the needles of the groups are raised the nibs lift the adjacent outer needles to a lower height so that they take the end of the yarn and secure it in the fabric. Needle selection is achieved by the provision of rockable jacks having frangible butts suitably positioned to ensure cancellation of selection by pressing the jacks inwards leaving the remaining jacks to be raised. Heel and toe pouches are formed on opposite groups of needles and additional butts are provided for rendering one group inoperative whilst the other is operative.
