Claims (24)
1. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A nether garment having a knitted pant portion with legs or leg openings and a crotch area between them, the knitted wales extending between said legs or leg openings, and a waist opening interrupting the knitted courses of the pant portion, wherein (a) the fabric of the pant portion' comprises an integral stretchable marginal band of elasticarfcet fabric at each of two opposed edges of the waist opening, which marginal bands extend in a wale-wise direction and incorporate elastic yarn and comprise or are comprised in an elasticated waist band for constricting the waist opening in wear, and (b) the fabric of each marginal band is gathered into a succession of course-wise extending folds or puckers.
2. A garment according to Claim 1, in which each fold or pucker comprises a plurality of courses spanned by held loops, or floats of elastic yarn.
3. A garment according to either of the preceding Claims, in which, between successive folds or puckers, there is at least one intervening course comprising loops of elastic and/or textile yarn.
4. A garment according to Claim 2 , or Claim 2 as modified by Claim 3, in which the held loops or floats of elastic yarn are combined with help loops or floats of a textile yarn which limit, but do not prevent, stretch of the elastic yarn.
5. A garment according to Claim 3 wherein the intervening course or courses comprise loops or both yarns the length of the loops of textile yarn being such as to limit, but not prevent, stretch of the elastic loops.
6. A garment according to Claim 2 wherein, in the marginal bands, the fabric of the folds or puckers comprises additional courses of a textile yarn.
7. A garment according to Claim 6 wherein, in the folds or puckers, the number of wales knitted of the textile yarn is the same as, or greater than, the number of wales in which loops or floats of the elastic yarn are held.
8. A garment according -to any of the preceding Claims wherein at one or each edge of each marginal band the elastic yarn is secured by being knitted in.
9. A garment according to any of the preceding Claims, wherein the waist opening is a wale-wise slit.
10. A garment according to any of the preceding Claims 1-8, wherein the waist opening has course-wise width and wale-wise length.
11. A garment according. to any of the preceding Claims, being a bifurcated nether garment of the class hereinbefore defined.
12. ·. A garment according to Claim 11 and according to Patent No. -1235361.
13. A garment according to Claim 1, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings
14. A method of making a knitted nether garment having a pant portion with legs or leg openings and a crotch area between them, the knitted wales extending between said legs or leg openings, and a waist opening interrupting the courses of the pant portion and bordered at each to two opposed edges by a stretchable knitted marginal band integral with the pant portion, which bands extend in a wale-wise direction and incorporate elastic yarn and comprise or are comprised in an elasticated waist band for constricting the waist opening in wear, which method comprises knitting from one leg or leg opening through the pant portion to the other leg or leg opening on a knitting machine, feeding elastic yarn to a group or groups of needles while knitting the pant portion to produce an area, or areas, extending in a wale-wise direction to form said marginal bands, and manipulating needles of said group to produce a succession of course-wise extending folds or puckers in said area or areas.
15. A method according to Claim 14 in which each fold or pucker is formed by (a) holding loops or floats of an elastic yarn, on or by selected needles of. the group from an initial course of said fold or pucker, (b) producing fabric for the fold or pucker by continuing to knit a plurality of courses of a textile yarn on other selected needles of the group, and (c) then reintroducing said first selected needles into activity in a further course whereby said held loops of floats are bound into said further course and span the courses of textile yarn and draw the latter into the fold or pucker.
16. A method according to Claim 15, wherein said selected needles remain inactive during step (b). or
17. A method according to Claim 15£ Claim 16 wherein, in the initial course, said selected needles take and produce loops from the textile yarn, which said loops have a length which limitf but do not prevent, stretch of the elastic yarn in the - completed fold or pucker.
18. A method according to any of Claims 14-17 wherein needles of the group knit at least one intervening course between successive folds or puckers.
19. A method according to Claim 18, wherein said intervening course is knitted of elastic and or textile yarn.
20. A method according to Claim 19, wherein said intervening course comprises loops of both yarns, and the length of the textile loops is such as to limit, but not prevent, stretch of the elastic loops.
21. A method according to Claim 15, or Claim 15 as modified by any of Claims 16 - 20, which comprises securing the ends of the elastic yarn by knitting it in at one or each edge of each band.
22. A method according to any of Claims 14-21, which comprises feeding the elastic yarn to and knitting it by said group of needles prior to and immediately subsequent to the formation of the bands.
23. A method according to Claim 15, wherein the loops of elastic yarn that are intended to be held are formed in a course following a course in which held textile loops of a previously formed fold or pucker are cleared by the needles. :
24. A method according to Claim 14, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings. Attorneys f o r A p p l i c a n t
