Abstract
562,031. Automatic control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1942, No. 15821. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A thermal switch for starting an electric discharge lamp 3 has a heater 27 arranged across its contacts 14, 15, the heater serving to bring the contacts into engagement and then being short-circuited by them so that an interrupting action ensues in which each "break" causes a voltage surge tending to start the discharge between the electrode 2 of the lamp ; should the lamp not start after a certain number of attempts, a second heater 25 which is fully energized each time the contacts close and so gradually raises the temperature of a metal block 19 carrying one of the bimetallic strips 17, causes the contacts to remain permanently closed. On the other hand, should the lamp start, the reduced voltage across the heater 27 and a saturable reactor 28 is insufficient to cause the contacts to re-engage and they remain open. The contacts 14, 15 are mounted on two bimetallic strips by means of intermediate strips of low conductivity, e.g. of stainless steel, and in the form shown the strip 16 serves to compensate for variations of ambient temperature while the coils 27, 25 both heat the strip 17. In a modification, the coil 27 heats the strip 16 and the coil 25 the strip 17, and the strips both move towards each other when heated.
