[Classes 44 and 89 (i)] A bolting - device has a rotating element passed through an opening or slot in the material to be connected and a sleeve positioned in the slot and carrying the bolt,which so engages the rotating element that on screwing up the bolt, the rotating element is turned into locking position. Fig. I shows such a device in the inserting position, while Fig. II shows the device in the locking position, the bifurcated rotating element 18 having been turned so that the limbs can pass the part 16 of the sleeve and the ends 20, 21 are brought into clamping contact with the sheets &c. to be connected. The bolt 10 is housed in the head 14 of the sleeve and engages a tapped bore in the part 18. The sleeve is formed at 17, Figs. I and V, to limit the rotation of the member 18 to about ninety degrees and an aperture 137 may serve to indicate whether the parts are in the insertion or the locking position. The nut part of the member 18 is preferably fitted with a fibre or like insert to ensure sufficient friction for turning the part 18 into the looking position. Modifications are illustrated applied to flush work both with countersunk and dimpled plates. Some of the elements may be interchanged between the sleeve and rotating members and various means are illustrated for limiting the rotation. Packing may be introduced between the edge of the bolt 10 and the recess in the head 14 of the sleeve and between the underside of the head 14 and the plates to be clamped to make the joint fluid tight. Spring, rubber, leather, fibre &c. washers, collars &c. may be fitted between the bolt and the sleeve to restrict the tendency of the parts to move' accidentally from the insertion position. Various ways of attaching the device to structural elements are illustrated.
