Abstract

1327021 Clamp J F BARDOLPH & PARTNERS Ltd 28 Aug 1970 [29 May 1969] 27263/ 69 Heading E2B A clamp for securing sheets 6, 6 together comprises a holder 1, a collet 2, an expander member 3 and a sleeve nut 4. The holder 1 has an outwardly-directed portion 1b provided with spanner-flats, is bored at 1a to receive the collet 2 therein and is screw-threaded at 8. The collet 2 is split at 2b, is provided with endflanges 2a, 2c and has the expander member 3 located therein. The latter is tapered at 3a, is screw-thereaded at 3b, is passed with clearance through a portion 4b of the sleeve nut 4 and has a nut 5 threaded thereon. The sleeve nut 4 has internal screw-threads which engage the screw threads 8 of the holder 1, the screw threads preferably being left handed. In use the flanged-end 2a of the collet 2 is passed through holes 6a, 6a in the plates 6, 6, the nut 5 is tightened to move the expander member 3 and expand the end 2a of the collet 2. The latter slides until its flange 2c abut the portion 4b of the sleeve nut 4. The latter, having spanner-flats thereon, is rotated relative to the holder 1 so as to force the portion 1b thereof and the flanged-end 2a of the collet 2 towards each other. A washer 7 of leather, for example, is positioned between the portion 1b and the adjacent plate 6 to prevent the latter being damaged. In another embodiment a holder 11, Fig. 3, screwably receives a member 14, a collet 12 is split at 12b and has flanges 12a, 12c, the latter abutting a portion 14b of the member 14, and an expander member 13 is provided with a tapered end 13a and a screw-threaded end 13b, the latter carrying a spring 19 and having a nut 15 screwed thereon. In use axial pressure applied to the nut 15 causes the tapered end 13a, of the expander member 13 to move away from the end 12a of the collet 12 so as to allow the latter to be passed through holes 16a, 16a in plates 16, 16. On releasing the pressure on the nut 15, the spring 19 causes the tapered end 13a of the expander member 13 to expand the end 12a of the collet 12. Further expansion is effected by rotation of the nut 15 and of the member 14.
