Abstract
561,212. Chromates and bichromates. UDY, M. J. Aug. 28, 1942, No. 12167. Convention date, March 19, 1942. [Class 1 (iii)] Calcium chromate-bearing material is digested with an aqueous liquid containing an acid reacting with calcium chromate to produce a more insoluble calcium compound, in presence of an amount of basic constituents sufficient to convert most of the chromate to dichromate. The dichromate solution is separated from the insoluble matter, and may be reconverted into calcium chromate by treatment with a calcium compound.. The crude calcium chromate may be.obtained by roasting ferrochromium, oxidized ferrochromium, chromite ore &c. with lime, with or without soda ash. The acid may be carbonic or sulphuric or an acid salt of these acids. When calcium chromate is the endproduct desired only a minimum amount of alkali is added and the chromium is separated in solution as calcium bichromate, which is reconverted to chromate by treatment with lime. When an alkali metal bichromate is to be produced the metal is added in the form of'a chromate or an acid salt in amount sufficient to form bichromate with the' whole of the chromium.
