Abstract

Peracids and their salts are made by reacting an organic acid anhydride with an aqueous solution of an inorganic peroxygen compound, there being present sufficient alkali to cause the final pH to be between 5 and 11. Suitable inorganic peroxygen compounds are hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide and sodium perborate, and suitable anhydrides are acetic, succinic, phthalic, propionic, butyric, valeric, crotonic, maleic anhydrides, and the anhydrides of hydroxy acids such as malic, tartaric and lactic acids, aromatic acids, aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic acids and acids derived from heterocyclic compounds. The anhydrides of benzoic, glycollic, cyclohexene carboxylic, benzene sulphonic, nicotinic, quinolinic and adipic acids are suitable. Examples describe the production of peracetic acid from acetic anhydride and hydrogen peroxide. Specification 549,015, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 550,490.
