Abstract
561,087. Air-speed indicators. K.D.G. INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and EVERINGTON, G. D. Oct. 16, 1942, No. 14530. [Class 69 (i)] In an air-speed indicator with means for converting the velocity head of an air-stream into a pressure head, and an indicator. responsive to changes in pressure heads and moving a pointer over a scale, means responsive to changes in external absolute pressure conditions are provided for varying the constant or coefficient of the means which convert the velocity head to pressure heads. As shown, a Pitot-tube 13 is open at both front and rear ends 14, 15 and supported by a streamlined strut 11; it is surrounded by a tube'16 with openings 20 leading to a static chamber 21. The static chamber 21 and Pitot-tube 13 are connected by tubes 22, 28 respectively to an air-speed indicator 23, and the tube 22 has a branch 24 leading to a temperature-compensated aneroid pressure-responsive device 25 which progressively opens, butterfly valve 27 in the Pitot-tube as the height above sea level is reduced, so reducing the coefficient of the Pitot-tube. The static chamber and Pitot-tube 'may be separate. Instead of, or in addition to, varying the coefficient of the Pitot-tube, the static chamber may be replaced by a venturi device, the size of the throat of the latter being varied by the device 25.
