675,087. Aircraft safe-speed indicators; indicating-apparatus. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1947 [Feb. 1, 1946], No. 944/47. Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv). Aircraft air-speed indicating apparatus comprises means for indicating the actual air-speed, a member responsive to atmospheric pressure for indicating the maximum safe air-speed at any attitude and means for adjusting the velocity ratio of the transmission to the maximum safe air-speed indicator according to a predetermined Mach number, the transmission comprising a link pivotally connected to the pressure-responsive member, a shaft adapted to be rotated by movement of the link and a driving connection between said shaft and the maximum safe air-speed indicator. The maximum safe air-speed, which is a function of the maximum permissible Mach number and of the altitude, is indicated by a pointer 15 of distinguishable colour or form. The pointer is driven by means of a toothed sector and pinion, by a counter-weighted shaft 42 to which is secured a radial arm 44 engaged by a pin 39 on a link 38 operated by an evacuated capsule 36 mounted on a casing 11, the interior of which is connected to the static head of the aircraft. The velocity ratio between the capsule 36 and the pointer 15 may be varied by raising or lowering the link 38 by means of a link 50 pivoted to the link 38 and eccentrically to a shaft 52, to which is geared an adjustment screw in the rear of the casing. The shaft 52 also carries a toothed sector 55 meshing with a pinion 56 on a shaft carrying a scale 18 of Mach numbers which co-operates with an index 17 on the instrument dial and by means of which the velocity ratio is correctly set. The pointer 15 may be prevented from passing above a preferred indication by means of an arm 66 on the shaft 42 which abuts a pin on a plate 63 rotatably adjustable by a screw 60 on the front of the instrument. The normal airspeed pointer 14 is arranged coaxially with the pointer 15 and is driven by a toothed sector 25 on a counterweighted shaft 24 rocked by a link 22 operated by a diaphragm 20, the interior of which is connected to the pitot tube of the aircraft.
