Abstract

<PICT:0560538/IV/1> A highly twisted and sized synthetic fibre-forming polymer yarn, e.g. a "nylon" yarn, is made in a continuous operation by sizing a yarn having a twist of less than 5 turns per inch, drying the sized yarn at a temperature between room temperature and 50 DEG C. and winding up the sized yarn at a rate to give a completed package containing not more than 12 per cent moisture based on the weight of the dry yarn; a twist in excess of 15 turns per inch is subsequently imparted to the yarn. As shown the yarn 15 is passed through a tension device 19, which gives a tension on the yarn exceeding 0.15 grams per denier, before passing over the sizing roller 23 from which it passes to the winding-up bobbin 33 where continual heat is applied to the yarn by a strip heater 35 comprising a resistance element 37 and a shield 39. In a modification the yarn is dried by air blown thereon at room temperature or heated so as to heat the yarn at a temperature not greater than 50 DEG C. or the yarn may be passed through a chamber supplied with warm air. A size for use with a 30 denier, 10 filament polyhexamethylene adipamide yarn having 1 1/2 turns per inch has the following composition:-Partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate 76 per cent, boric acid 16.4 per cent and polyethylene glycol 7.6 per cent, this basic size being diluted to contain 91 per cent water; the proportions are by weight.
