Abstract

560,433. Sliding clasp fasteners. GOLDNER, R. Dec. 30, 1942, Nos. 18535 and 18536. Convention dates, Nov. 12, 1941 and Aug. 27, 1942. [Class 44] In a sliding clasp fastener of the kind in which the fastener members comprise wire or like helical coils of equal pitch and opposite sense interlocked by action of the usual slider with -converging channels one (or both) of the members is of composite form comprising two or more coils wound in contiguity, or substantially so, and the space between successive windings of one member is less than the thickness, or the combined thicknesses as the case may be, of the material of the co-operating member so that when interlocked the component coils of the composite member become relatively laterally displaced, giving a positive interlock which resists separation either by lateral pull or by bending of the stringers, and without the necessity for providing recesses and projections or other predetermined deformation of the coils. Fig. 5 shows a fastening member M comprising a single coil x and a composite member N comprising a pair of coils y, z. Fig. 1 shows the normal condition of the coils y, z, and Fig. 6 shows the members M, N in fastened condition with the coils y, z laterally displaced by the interlocking coil x. The members may be secured to the stringers in any suitable way. Fig. 5 shows them secured by stitches T, T<1>, the latter embracing both coils y, z to hold them in contiguity. Alternatively one coil of a composite member may be secured to the stringer, and the other coil or coils secured to the first at isolated points so as to leave it or them in " floating " condition. The Specification describes a three-coil member so mounted and Figs. 13, 14 show a slider suitable for use with this modification in which the lateral slots G, H are curved and the channel entrances U, V at different levels.
