Abstract
560,316. Aircraft landing gear. MACLAREN UNDERCARRIAGE CO., Ltd., and MAGLAREN, O. F. Dec. 2, 1941, No. 15536. [Class 4] In'an aircraft landing element structure comprising an auxiliary wheel arranged to contact the ground at landing, just prior to touching down of the main landing element thereby 'to pre-set the main element directionally in accordance with the direction of travel, the auxiliary wheel is carried by a structure which is pivoted to the support of the main element for up and down movement relatively to the main element support, against the resistance of a resilient device. The auxiliary wheel may also act as a servo-device to effect positive steering movement of the main landing element. As shown, an auxiliary wheel 9 is mounted by a steering pillar 10 on a frame 8 pivoted at 12 for vertical movement, to the swivelling fork 5 of a main landing wheel 7. A telescopic shockabsorber 16 extending between the fork 5 and frame 8 holds the wheel 9 in a relatively low position when the machine is in the air, so that this wheel, in landing, touches the ground prior to the wheel 7 and both wheels are turned about the axis of the fork 5 to correspond with any drift component in the direction of travel of the aircraft before the wheel 7 touches down. After landing the wheel 9 may be turned about the axis of the pillar 10 by a remote control cable 11 attached to an arm on the pillar and thus effect steering movement of the wheel 7 through the frame 8. The auxiliary wheel 9 with the frame 8 may be retractable and in the retracted position may engage a lug on a non- rotatable part of the mounting to lock the wheel 7 in its fore-and-aft angular setting. To avoid shimmy effect the wheel 9 may have a high pressure or a solid tyre or it may comprise two wheels rotatable about a common axis and set with a slight toe-in. Damping means may be provided operating between the fork 5 and a non-swivelling part. Specifications 509,923, 542,648, and 559,582 are referred to.
