Abstract

560,315. Moulding cartridge cases. DICKSON, W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 28, 1941, Nos. 13865/41 and 16973/42. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] In a cartridge case moulded from a plastic substance, the ratio of the maximum thickness of the annular wall of the case to the thickness of the head portion lies between 4 : 5 and 4 : 16, and a strengthening annular reinforcing member 6 is secured to the head portion of the interior of the case. The case 3 may be moulded from plasticized cellulose acetate. The member 6 may be of the same material as the case or of different material ; it may be of thermosetting material, paper, vulcanized fibre or paper impregnated with synthetic resin. The member 6 may be completely or partly preformed and may be secured in position during or after moulding of the case. Thus, a coiled strip of paper is inserted into the case and heavily compressed into shape. The case may be injection moulded around a preformed member positioned on the end of the core of the mould. The member may be keyed in position in the moulded case by means of a projection or projections formed on the member or on the interior of the case or on both, as by recessing the member or the core. The member may be secured in position in the case by adhesive or pressure or both. Where the contacting surface of the case and/or member is amenable to solvent actions, the necessary.adhesion may be obtained by moistening with solvent and pressing into position. The member may be compression-moulded in situ from moulding powder, the case being supported by a mould.
