Abstract
630,539. Bending wood; plywood. HARRIS LEBUS, Ltd., and DOUGLAS, W. D. Nov. 21, 1947, No. 30952. [Class 145(ii)] Bends are formed in wood, plywood or wood substitutes, e.g. chipboard, 1, by cutting out a rounded channel 2, 3 on what is to be the inside of the bend, bending, and whilst bent affixing one or more flexible laminations 4 to the inner face of the channel. The laminations may be wood, metal sheet, vulcanized fibre, laminated paper or plastic material and when of wood the grain runs preferably circumferentially of the bend. The laminations are attached to the channel 2 by means of male and female formers 9, 5, Fig. 5, which simultaneously bend the wood 1 and laminations 4, and press the latter, coated with adhesive, into contact with the wood. The male former 9 is preferably deformable, e.g. of flexible hosepipe 12 which may be filled with liquid or compressed air, and attached to a rigid piston 13, or may be in two portions 15, 16, Fig. 7 (not shown) one of which, 16, is deformable. It is in general necessary to " overbind " the wood and laminations so that on releasing the pressure the materials adjust themselves to the required curvature, and for this purpose the central portion of the female former 5 is thinned to be flexible, and wedges 19, Fig. 8 (not shown), are introduced between the former and the base 6.
