Abstract
560,307. Supply and control systems for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and RUFF, H. R. Nov. 9, 1942, No. 15819. [Class 38 (iv)] Stroboscopic illumination is obtained from a fluorescent electric discharge lamp having a cathode 2 of low current capacity and means 4, 5 to facilitate the starting of the discharge connected in a circuit which supplies current continuously to heat the cathode and to charge a condenser 9 which is discharged at the required frequency between the anode and cathode; the discharge may be produced as a relaxation oscillation controlled by resistance 12 when the supply circuit 6 is direct current, or it may occur once in each cycle when the supply is alternating current. The discharge may be controlled in association with a balancing test on rotating device by switching means 16 which may be of the kind described in 'Specification 555,595, [Group XIX]. As shown, a rectifier 10 is provided for charging an auxiliary condenser 8 of large capacity ; a switch 14 disconnects this condenser and shortcircuits the rectifier when a d.c. supply is used.
