Abstract
560,217. Switchgear structures; automatic circuit-breakers ; latching switches. SWITCHGEAR & COWANS, Ltd., and UPTON, A. April 12, 1943, No. 5827. [Class 38 (v)] A switchgear structure comprises a fixed part having bus-bar socket contacts b and a movable unit containing the circuit-breaker the terminals of which are in the form of plugs a for engaging the sockets b. A socket 17 connected to plug a normally is connected to a ring 16 connected to a breaker terminal by means of a sleeve 15, which can be slid so as to connect ring 16 instead to earth. The operating means comprises an insulating link 20, lever 19 and shaft 22. The sleeves. may be operated from a handle-shaft having a locking disc at each end co-operating with the breaker handle-and an earthing handle, respectively, through separate locking bolts on either side of the structure. The earthing handle is able to close the breaker after the sleeves have been earthed, thereby to earth the controlled circuit, Figs. 2-5 (not shown). In Fig. 6, the breaker handle m is movable to the closed position when the earthing handle 7 operates the sleeves to the earthed position shown. In the breaker-open position a bar 13 can be slid into slot 31 to lock it and also to free the handle 7. A bell-crank lever 35 rotating with handle m is connected, by a link 37 and pivot 23a to a catch plate 23 which is pivoted at 24a to the contact lift rod 24 guided by links 25, 26. Plate 23 is normally locked by a trip lever 27 operable by an overload or no-volt plunger 28, and a gravity catch 36 is provided on lever 35 whereby counterclockwise opening movement of handle m automatically effects tripping. In the earthing position shown, handle 7 acting through pin 32, moves a rod 33 to immobilize gravity catch 36 and to force lever 27 to lock plate 23, so establishing a driving connection between m, 24, and enabling bar 13 to engage the slot 30 and the breaker to be opened by the handle m without affecting the trip mechanism and to be closed notwithstanding the controlled circuit is free from voltage.
