Abstract
560,041. Hardening steel by twisting. SQUARE GRIP REINFORCEMENT CO. (LONDON), Ltd., and GLEGG, G. L. Sept. 14, 1942, No. 12923. [Class 83 (iv)] To obtain a constant yield point in bars for reinforcing concrete &c., hardened by twisting, the torque reaction, during twisting is used to determine the extent of twist. When this reaction reaches a desired value it may automatically cut out the motor, cause a clutch arranged between motor and work to slip, or otherwise cut off power transmission. For instance the normally stationary end of the bar 10 may be secured to a lever 11 and twist thereof be resisted by a spring 12 or the like. When the other end is twisted by motor-driven gearing until the requisite torque is reached movement of the lever 11 operates a switch S in the circuit of the electric motor drive or of an electrical transmission device interposed between any power unit and the work. In modifications the current operating the prime motor or the motor of an electric transmission device is arranged to open said switch S at a given amperage or this is indicated by an ammeter and the attendant opens the switch. In other modifications a power unit is chosen having a load/speed characteristic such that, when operated for a' definite period to twist the bar, speed reduction suffered through torque reaction results in the bar being twisted only the desired amount to attain the desired yield point. An electric motor for this purpose is a slip-ring alternating current motor having a selected external resistance in the rotor circuit. In another modification the rod is twisted by gearing 17, Fig. 2, and a fluid pressure motor 15 which is driven by fluid in a reservoir 20 which is kept at a constant pressure by a pump 19 and adjustable relief valve 21 so that when the resistance to twisting reaches the desired value the pressure in the reservoir 20 has risen to the. point at which it opens the valve 21.
