Abstract

560,031. Making composite tools. ST. CLAIR, L. J. July 27, 1942, No. 10517. Convention date, July 21, 1941. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Brazing.-A composite cutting tool with a pre-hardened high speed steel tip and a carbon or alloy steel support is made by applying flux and a low-temperature brazing alloy between the parts and applying sufficient heat to the support to melt the brazing alloy to join the parts while controlling the heat to prevent the operative portion of the tip being heated above its annealing temperature and then discontinuing the heat and cooling the tip. The flux may consist of a mixture of boric acid with alkali metal fluorides and borates or a flux as described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,717,250 and 1,835,965, and the brazing alloy may consist of 50 per cent silver, 15¢ per cent copper, 16¢ per cent zinc and 18 per cent cadmium. Pieces of the alloy 15, 16 are placed between the tip 13 and the shank and the shank is heated by a gas torch 17, heat being conducted away from the tip by a steel bar 18 provided with a pair of steel blocks 19, 20 or the tip being kept cool by an air or vapour jet. In the former case the parts are held under pressure by the weight of the bar 18 and in the latter case by a hand-held rod. After the brazing alloy is melted a water or air jet is applied to the underside of the shank to draw the heat away from the tip as soon as possible. Tips 22, 23 may be similarly brazed to the part 21 of a tool for finishing the bore of a cylinder.
