Abstract
1360221 Making engineers' tools BENDIX CORP 20 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 34062/71 Heading B3A Cutting tools are made by welding a hard metal tip to a shank of low alloy or carbon steel and forming flutes and cutting edges in the resulting blank, the flutes extending over the tip and for part of the length of the shank. The tool may be a twist drill, Fig. 1, reamer or screwtap which is provided with a tip of carbide, high-speed steel or cobalt steel secured to the shank by friction-welding. The shank may be hardened. After the welding stage, flash is removed and the weld annealed. Flute milling, straightening, grinding, shot peening and heat treatment follow.
