Abstract

559,894. Bombs, dropping ; fuzes. WATTS, R. H., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Sept. 2, 1942, No. 12375. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A straight pull is imparted to the safety pin 26 of a detonator 24 by means of a guide 32 secured to the bomb 12. The pin is pulled out by a cable 27 which passes through a slot in the guide, the upper end of the cable having a loop which passes through a rubber washer 36 and is correctly positioned in a fuzing unit ?8 by an adaptor 35. When the bomb is to be dropped "live", a remotely-controlled electricallyoperated retaining member 37 is moved to the righthand position to engage the loop in the cable, and on release of the bomb the pin 26 is drawn out. When the bomb is to be dropped "safe", the member 37 is allowed to remain in the left-hand position, and the cable is pulled through the washer 36 and falls with the bomb, the pin remaining in position as shown. The fuzing unit 28 is attached to the inside of the hinged lid 29 of the bomb shoot 11. The spring- loaded striker of the detonator 24 is released for movement by rotation of a screwed spindle actuated by a spinner vane rotated by air resistance as the bomb falls. The vane is enclosed in a cap 38 attached to a flange 39 by light clips and connected to roller mechanism 42 by a cable 41 ; as the bomb falls, the cable unwinds a little and then stops, the cap 38 being jerked off, leaving the vane free to spin.
