Abstract

559,860. Lubricating grease STANDARF OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 23, 1942, No 10303. Convention date, July 5, 1941. [Class 91] Sodium soap greases are stabilized against gum deposition, oxidation, bleeding, and change of lubricating qualities by the incorporation of from 0.5 per cent. to 1 per cent. of a metallic soap of beryllium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, or tin. Hydrogenated fish oil acids, palmitic, stearic, oleic, naphthenic, oxidised wax, on any other fatty acid of over nine carbon atoms are reacted with hot aqueous sodium hydroxide and a soluble salt of the desired metal added whereupon the metallic soap precipitates as a powder or gummy mass. The soap is washed free of sodium salts and dried, and is then ready for use. In the case of zinc naphthenate, the metallic soap may be formed by direct action between zinc oxide and the acid at temperatures up to 350‹F. The base oil for incorporation with the soap should preferably have a viscosity of from 40 to 55 seconds Saybolt at 210‹F. In an example stearic acid is heated with paraffin oil to 140-150‹F., caustic soda solution stirred in, the temperature raised to 220-240‹F. with the addition of a further quantity of oil, the free alkalinity adjusted to .03 to .06 per cent., and the balance of the oil containing zinc stearate in suspension then added. A small quantity of an inhibitor such as phenyl-α-naphthylamine or a dye may be incorporated.
