Abstract

559,237. Building frameworks. LONDON FERRO-CONCRETE CO., Ltd., and MUNZ, S. June 5, 1942, No. 7685. [Classes 20 (i), 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] A rigid framed building structure of metal or ferroconcrete is provided with rigid joints adapted to resist both shear and bending moment at the points of contraflexure of the uprights and the beams. The points of contraflexure in the members being predetermined according to the loading to which each member is submitted. For a concrete structure the columns c are provided with pinned or combined half lap and pin joints 7 formed by pin members 5 entering recesses. 16 in the members and being secured therein by cement. The columns carry cantilever sections e to the ends of which are secured beam sections g by inclined half-lap pinned and bolted joints 9 and the spaced beams g are interconnected by further cantilever members j and beams sections k also joined by rigid joints at the points of controflexure. The column sections may be formed by a projection on one concrete member entering a corresponding recess in the end of the adjacent member and being cemented therein. For a ridged arched member, Fig. 7, comprising uprights 17 and inclined arch members 18 the rigid joints 19 are disposed at the points of contraflexure of the arched member. For metal I-section beam-construction the joints at the points of controflexure are formed by cutting away half of the sections on the abutting ends of the cantilever 21 and frame bar and welding short lengths of angle section bars 24 to each side of each bar at the cut away portion so that the flanges of these bars can overlap and be secured together by bolts. Outside butt straps may also be secured over the joints in the flanges of the bars. The cantilevers 21 are welded end on to the stanchions 20 on each side thereof.
