Abstract
559,172. De-icing fluids. ANGLO-SAXON PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., and JAPES, D. H. July 10, 1942, No. 9584. [Class 29] A de-icing fluid which is without solvent action on the finishes of aircraft comprises a water-miscible polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol or ethylene glycol and a spreading agent consisting of a monohydric alcohol such as diacetone alcohol, secondary butyl alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol, the viscosity of the fluid at -40‹C being not more than 500 centi-stokes, the setting point being below -40‹C, the flash point being above 90‹F, and the spreading pressure expressed as the advancing angle of contact between the fluid and surfaces of aircraft being not more than 45 degrees. Corrosion inhibitors such as sodium nitrite or various other metal salts, oxidation inhibitors such as B-naphthol, fire proofing materials such as carbon tetrachloride and wetting agents such as an alkali metal salt of a sulphated.higher alcohol may be added. In one example 35 parts of ethylene glycol, 55 parts of secondary butyl alcohol, 10 parts of water, 0.2 parts of B-naphthol and 0.2 parts of sodium nitrite are incorporated.
