Abstract

A corrosion inhibitor for use in the cooling system of an internal combustion engine comprises, by weight, from 1 to 5 parts of at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal borate, between 0.01 and 2 parts of at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal nitrite, between 0.01 and 2 parts of at least one "benzotriazole compound" of formula <FORM:1087351/C4-C5/1> wherein X is nitrogen, methylidyne, aminomethylidyne, benzylidyne or guanidinomethylidyne, and R is hydrogen or alkyl, or an alkali metal when X is nitrogen, and between 0.1 and 10 parts oil inhibitor comprising a major amount of non-polar oil and a non-preferentially watersoluble polar oil in an amount sufficient to cause the mineral oil to cling to metal surfaces in the cooling system. By "non-preferentially water-soluble polar oil" is meant those oils which when mixed with equal amounts of a nonpolar oil and water are not so polar as to dissolve completely in the water; this oil may be a sulphonated petroleum or sulphonated alkylbenzene or alkyl naphthalene. The "benzotriazole compound" may be benzotriazole, sodium benzotriazole, methyl benzotriazole, benzimidazole, guanidino-benzimidazole, or 2-phenyl benzimidazole.
