Abstract

An antistick composition for application to tacky bituminous surfaces comprises a water-soluble cellulose ether or alginate (see Group III) as film-forming material and a normally liquid water-soluble polyalkylene glycol and/or mono-ether derivative thereof as plasticizer, the hygroscopicity of the latter being not substantially greater than that of the film-forming material alone. The glycols used may be polyethylene glycols and the water-soluble ethylene and propylene glycol copolymers of U.S.A. Specification 2,425,845. The preferred mono-ether derivatives of such polyglycols are the C1-C4 alkyl ethers. Typical suitable copolymers and their ethers are the members of the 75-H series (diols) and the 50-HB series (mono-butyl ethers) of fluids marketed under the Registered Trade Mark "Ucon." An example of an antistick coating is a film deposited from a water solution of 2 parts by weight of a water-soluble methyl cellulose and 1-4 parts by weight of a polyalkylene glycol mono-ether derivative having a low hygroscopicity, e.g. "Ucon" 50-HB. This composition may be applied as an aqueous solution, which may contain as little as 3 per cent by weight of the composition. The compositions may be applied to bitumen-surfaced metal building sheets (see Group VIII). Specifications 410,305 and 583,241 are referred to.ALSO:An antistick composition for application to tacky bituminous surfaces comprises a water soluble alginate (or water soluble cellulose ether (see Group IV a) ) as film-forming material, and a normally liquid water-soluble polyalkylene glycol and/or mono-ether derivative thereof as plasticizer, the hydroscopicity of the latter being not substantially greater than that of the film-forming material alone. The glycols used may be polyethylene glycols and the water soluble ethylene and propylene glycol copolymers of U.S. Specification 2,425,845. The preferred mono-ether derivatives of such polyglycols are the C1-C4 alkyl ethers. Typical suitable copolymers and their ethers are the members of the 75-H series (diols) and the 50-HB series (mono-butyl ethers) of fluids marketed under the Registered Trade Mark "Ucon." An example of a composition in the form of a solution suitable for application is made by dissolving in water 2 per cent by weight of sodium alginate, 1 per cent of soap and 1 to 2 per cent of "Ucon" 50-HB. The alginates used may be sodium potassium or ammonium alginate or copper or zinc-ammonium alginate. The soap ingredient is optional and functions as a wetting agent. The compositions may be applied to bitumen-surfaced building sheets (see Group VIII). Specifications 410,305 and 583,241 are referred to.
